Shahzaib Hasan becomes fifth player to be suspended in PSL corruption case

On Friday, Pakistan batsman Shahzaib Hasan was formally charged and provisionally suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in relation to the corruption scandal that took place during the second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Hasan, who played for the Karachi Kings, was summoned by the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) for the third time and handed a Notice of Charge for violating the PCB’s anti-corruption code. Hasan has been charged with the violations of code Articles 2.1.4, 2.4.4 and 2.4.5. The suspensions bars Hasan from participating in any form of cricket, with immediate effect.

Hasan and speedster Mohammad Irfan were both called upon by the ACU earlier this week, as the board investigated the spot-fixing scandal that shook the PSL in its opening week. Irfan was also formally charged and provisionally suspended earlier, for failing to report an approach by bookies on time.

The suspension now makes Hasan the fifth player to face the same fate from the PCB after Sharjeel Khan, Nasir Jamshed, Khalid Latif and Irfan were all suspended by the PCB earlier. Hasan has two weeks to respond to the charge.   

Hasan has represented Pakistan in 10 T20Is and 3 ODIs, the last being in November 2010 against South Africa in Dubai. Hasan is most remembered for opening the batting when Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the final of the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, to be crowned world champions.
