Virat Kohli’s ton against New Zealand today took his 2017 ODI century tally to six, which now stands as the most by a captain in a calendar year. He also became the first batsman to reach 9000 runs in less than 200 innings as AB de Villiers, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar follow him.

India were able to post a massive total of 337 runs on Sunday in Kanpur as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hit centuries in the series-defining ODI. Kohli’s second of the series against New Zealand has now taken him past the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith, and AB De Villiers as the highest centurion in a year as a skipper.

The 28-year-old opened the account with a ton against West Indies, which was followed by another against England and then two each against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Kohli has scored 1437 runs in 2017, which is the highest by a captain in ODIs. He is followed by former Australia skipper Ponting, who scored 1424 runs in 2007, Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq, who scored 1373 runs in 2013, Mohammad Azharuddin scoring 1268 runs in 1998 and Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews, who managed to score 1244 runs in 2014.

Apart from these, Kohli also became the first batsman to take less than 200 innings to reach 9000 in One Day Internationals. The skipper leads this list with just 194 innings, with de Villiers (205), Ganguly (228), Tendulkar (235) and Brian Lara (239) following him.
