BCCI has announced that Shardul Thakur will replace pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the England series as the later failed to recover from the thumb injury he suffered against Ireland. The 26-year-old Maharashtra bowler has only played three ODIs and seven T20Is for India so far.

Bumrah’s injury was revealed following India’s win in the T20I series against Ireland when BCCI announced that the Mumbai Indians’ bowler had suffered an injury to his non-playing hand. This resulted in the death over specialist missing the ongoing T20I series with the ODI format still a doubt. However, it has been revealed that the strike bowler will now miss the three ODIs as well.

While Chennai Super Kings’ Deepak Chahar was called on to replace Bumrah in the T20I series, Thakur will now take his place in the 50-over format.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Shardul Thakur as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ODI squad,” read the BCCI press release.

“The fast bowler suffered an injury to his left thumb during India’s first T2OI against Ireland in Dublin. He was ruled out of the ongoing T2OI series against England.”

With the BCCI already announcing that the bowler had gone through successful surgery on his hand, it remains to be seen if Bumrah would recover in time to play the five-match Test series.

“Bumrah underwent a surgery on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in Leeds before returning to India. The surgery was successful and he will commence rehabilitation under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team,” the press release added.

India’s squad for ODIs against England:

Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur, Hardik Pandya, Siddarth Kaul, Umesh Yadav
