ICC World Cup 2019 | Defeat against Australia gave us a good kick, says Jason Roy

Jason Roy played a key role behind England’s resurrection in the ongoing World Cup after losing back-to-back games against Sri Lanka and Australia. Roy milked runs at the top and set the stage on fire alongside Jonny Bairstow. After dominating Australia in the last few years, England were thrashed by their arch-rivals in the group stage encounter, which just pushed them for good, feels Roy. 

“We didn’t get too down or upset. It gave us a good kick and pushed us to actually bring out the best in ourselves I think, and that stands us in good stead for the final. We’re in a very good place with our cricket, and like we’ve shown in the last few games, we’re doing pretty well. Do the right things tomorrow from the start, and hopefully we’ll get the benefits,” Roy said. 

Roy missed few games in the middle due to a torn hamstring and his absence certainly hampered England’s success. He was in great form and had also scored 153 against Bangladesh. However, his return turned out to be only prolific for England as he scored three half-centuries in as many games on his comeback, including the 85 in the semi-final. 

“It’s professional sport, emotions run high. There was a lot of passion. The last few years have been a lot of hard work to get where I’ve got now. So to get out like that was slightly disappointing, and I probably showed it more than I should have. But you ride the wave and we’re in the final now. We’ve just got to go out and perform. It’s nothing to do with the status. We just want to win the World Cup for the nation and inspire the next generation,” Roy added.
