Glenn Maxwell has stated that he is not surprised by Virat Kohli’s good gesture during the encounter between India and Australia, referring to the India skipper’s gesture asking the crowd not to boo Steve Smith. Kohli had asked the crowd to cheer instead of shouting ‘cheater’ slogans.

Steve Smith, along with David Warner, made his return to international cricket with this World Cup in England and Wales. The former Australia skipper was banned for a period of 12 months due to his involvement in the ball tampering scandal and was viciously booed for the same in his side’s campaign opener at Bristol.

The response of the crowd was no different when Smith was fielding near the boundary at The Oval on Sunday. The stadium was filled with Indian fans who were shouting slogans of ‘cheater’ directed towards Smith, however, Virat Kohli came to the batsman’s rescue. The Indian skipper waved towards the fans, pointed towards the New South Wales player and clapped his hands, suggesting them to cheer the Australian star.

Glenn Maxwell expressed his happiness over Kohli’s gesture and reckoned that he is not surprised by the same.

“It’s nice to hear that and I’m not surprised by that, because we do get along as individuals with him really well off the field. What happens on the field, that’s for everyone else to write about,” he said, reported News.com.au.

“All we want to do is play our cricket hard and he does that, he plays his cricket hard, gets in the opposition’s faces but off the field, I’m not surprised by that at all,” added the 30-year-old.
