It might be a good day or not for India’s mainstays but when it comes to Wriddhiman Saha with his keeping gloves on, it’s more or less a wave of goodbye to bad luck. That’s the magic the Bengal boy weaves with his keeping fingers. Literally, his fingers. And the stretch of the magic is so long that it takes him just two fingers, as opposed to an average man’s five, produce the best of his shows.
Saha specials are aplenty at the subcontinent, where wicketkeeping is considered a significant challenge. One such miracle was produced by the keeper, at his home ground, on a historic day for Indian cricket. As Mahmudullah poked one outside off, his destiny was already sealed in the mind of the brilliant Saha. The ball was again directed towards the first slip, where Kohli was fielding, once again but as opposed to Mominul Haque’s thick edge, the nick off the bat was rather thin this time around. As Saha spotted the edge dying, he knew it was his catch to take and not Kohli’s.
Channelling the inner mastermind to his gifted hands, Saha made a completely full-stretch dive and emerged with the ball stuck right in the webbing between his thumb and forefinger. Two fingers, that’s all it takes. Kohli was indeed right when he designated Saha as the “the best wicketkeeper in the world”.

Some of his best catches, I remember
Theunis de Bruyn in both innings of Pune Test (2019)
Matthew Wade at Bengaluru in 2017 (2nd innings)
Steve O’Keefe at Pune in 2017 (1st innings
