In a significant setback for Sri Lankan cricket, Praveen Jayawickrama has been charged with match-fixing by the International Cricket Council. The 26-year-old spinner faces three counts of breaching the ICC's Anti-Corruption Code and is now subject to additional charges as per ICC’s code of conduct.

‌The ICC reports that Jayawickrama was approached to participate in match-fixing during international matches and the 2021 Lanka Premier League. Despite being required to report the incident, the spinner did not comply with the anti-corruption unit's instructions.
Further investigations uncovered that Jayawickrama deleted messages linked to the corrupt approaches. The ICC has granted the cricketer 14 days, starting from August 6, 2024, to respond to the charges and present his explanation.

The left-arm orthodox has been charged with the following offences under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code:

Article 2.4.4 – Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received to carry out fixing in future International Matches.

Article 2.4.4 –Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received in which he was asked to approach another player, on a corrupter’s behalf, to carry out fixing in the 2021 Lanka Premier League.

Article 2.4.7 – Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages in which the approaches and offers to engage in corrupt conduct were made.

Abiding by Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code, Sri Lanka Cricket and the International Cricket Council have agreed that the ICC will manage all charges against Praveen Jayawickrama, including those concerning the Lanka Premier League and international matches.

Jayawickrama has played 15 international matches for Sri Lanka, taking 32 wickets across all formats. However, his batting performance has been modest, with just 19 runs scored. He made his international debut during the Bangladesh tour of the Sri Lanka Test series in 2021, while his last appearance for the national team was in the 2022 T20I series against Australia.
