When the equipment most pivotal to a sport are a 160g leather and cork ball and a two kilo wooden sledgehammer, with their primary uses being hurled at over 80 mph and swinging unabashed respectively, safety is always a concern. Add an unfortunate power outage and tragedy becomes near inevitable.

New Zealand registered a convincing 43-run win over Pakistan in the third and final ODI to complete a comprehensive 3-0 whitewash, at Mount Maungaunai on Saturday. However, beyond all the results, there was a certain incident towards the very fag end of the game that took all the headlines and left a sour taste in everyone's mouth.

The visitors were on the brink of defeat with a daunting 47 required off just 22 deliveries to chase down the Kiwis' target of 265 in the shortened 42-over game but more importantly, the side had just two wickets remaining. Tayyab Tahir remained the team's last hope and albeit he was struggling to go and batting at nearly run-a-ball, his potential meant a slim chance always remained. That soon disappeared when Jacob Duffy came steaming in for the third delivery of 39th over and just as he released the ball from around the wicket, there was a sudden electricty outage that left the complete stadium blacked out for a few moments. To make matters worse, Duffy had chosen a menacing bumper as his choice of weapon, and Tahir only managed to get his head out of the way at last moment out of sheer instinct.

Twitter was grateful for Tahir's narrow escape and rained down blame on the Bay Oval for causing a potentially fatal accident.
