Brief score: CSK 154/10 (19.5) [Dewald Brevis 42(25), Ayush Mhatre 30(19); Harshal Patel 4/28(4)] lost to SRH 155/5 (18.4) [Ishan Kishan 44(34), Kamindu Mendis 32*(22); Noor Ahmad 2/42(4)] by five wickets.
Put in to bat first, CSK had the worst possible start losing opener Shaik Rasheed, caught at slip off the first ball of the innings from Mohammed Shami. However, Ayush Mhatre was unperturbed at the other end as he went about scoring boundaries in his usual free-spirited manner. The 17-year-old, who is the youngest ever to represent CSK in the IPL, started with an excellent backfoot punch off the veteran pacer before pulling him with panache in the third over. In between, the young opener also took on Pat Cummins scoring two boundaries off the pacer in the second over. With Cummins turning to Unadkat for another dismissal, the Mumbai batter trained his guns on the left-arm pacer too with back-to-back fours, with the first one resembling that of a forehand in tennis as the ball sailed over the bowler. But, the home side suffered two untimely blows in the fifth and sixth overs, including Mhatre’s, as SRH restricted CSK to 50/3 at the end of the powerplay. As spin was introduced by skipper Cummins, the runs dried up further as CSK could manage just 26 runs in the next four overs losing a wicket as well. With CSK looking for someone to rescue them, Dewald Brewis put his hand up to take the team forward. After a slow start, the South African batter, playing his first match of the season after coming in as an injury replacement, took SRH spinner Kamindu Mendis to the cleaners with three maximums in the 12th over. The former Mumbai Indians batter scored another biggie over extra over in the next over off Harshal Patel before departing in the next ball to a blinder by Kamindu Mendis at long-off. His 25-ball 42 was the saving grace for CSK as the home team struggled its way past the 150-run mark before folding up for 154 with a ball to spare.
The Sunrisers' chase started off on the wrong foot with Abhishek Sharma spooning a catch to cover off Khaleel Ahmed’s first over for a two-ball duck. With that dismissal, Ishan Kishan joined Travis Head in the middle as the orange army had a tricky chase in hand. Kishan scored two boundaries off Khaleel in the third over with Head following suit with two fours in the next over by Anshul Kamboj as the pair slowly got used to the slow surface. But the pacer came up with an excellent second over conceding just a solitary run and also dismissing Head with an off-cutter that hit the top of off-stump. Though the left-handed pair scored seven boundaries among them, a total of 22 dot balls hurt SRH’s prospects in the powerplay as the visitors’ score read 37/2. The Sunrisers tried to get a move on as Sam Curran was introduced into the attack with Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen both getting boundaries in the 12-run over. However, Ravindra Jadeja came up with the crucial dismissal of Klaasen in his second over, and the ninth of the innings, to put the match right in the balance. The match took another interesting turn with Kishan stitching a valuable 36-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Aniket Verma off just 23 balls. After a slow start, Aniket caught up with two sixes off Curran and Jadeja while Kishan continued playing the anchor role. Just as it looked like a comfortable chase for SRH with 65 required from 49 balls, Ishan Kishan got caught in the deep after the same shot had fetched him a six a ball earlier off Noor Ahmad. Aniket, the other set batter, also left for 19 two overs later, holing out in the deep to raise the home fans’ hopes. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Mendis, along with some erratic bowling from CSK, ensured there were no more surprises as the pair came up with enterprising cameos to finish the match in the penultimate over.
