‌SA vs AUS | Twitter and Mitchell Starc left stunned after Alex Carey drops Wiaan Mulder sitter

If there is one thing Australian cricket is known for is the ability to choke their opponents in finals and not allowing an inch. However, that wasn’t the case at Lord’s as Alex Carey dropped a sitter behind the stumps to leave Mitchell Starc and the slip cordon in shock.

Winning the toss, Temba Bavuma cited the “overhead conditions” as the reason for choosing the bowl first in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s. Restricting the defending champions to 67/4 in the first session gave the Proteas a great start. But Steve Smith and Beau Webster resurrected the innings with fifties to take their side to 190/5 by the end of the second session. The South Africans piled on some more misery after Tea as they wrapped up the Aussie innings for 212 in just 56.4 overs.

Australia come out flying out of the box dismissing Aiden Markram in the very first over. With Mitchell Starc breathing fire and the wicket doing its bit, South Africa were in for a torrid time. Wiaan Mulder was just trying to survive as the famed Aussie duo of Hazlewood and Strac piled on the pressure. The latter, as usual, created a chance for his team again with some accurate bowling but surprisingly was let down by his teammate.

On the fourth ball of his third over, Starc bowled an over pitched delivery with the natural angle taking the ball away from the right hander. Mulder, who had scored just one run off right deliveries, decided to take on the southpaw. All he could manage was an outside edge that looked destined to end up in the hands of Carey behind the stumps. The Aussie keeper got his gloves on the ball but could not hold on as it popped out and dropped to the ground after hitting it on the chest.

For a team not used to giving an inch, the Aussies looked stunned, none more than Mitch Strac. The Twitteratti were also surprised by the error and voiced their shock on social media.
