Commentators' curse is a phenomenon as old as commentary itself, with no scientific backing for it but a widely accepted philosophy all the same. Sanjay Manjrekar became it's latest practitioner in Leeds on Friday after an out of the blue comment targeted at Virat Kohli ended up costing KL Rahul.

‌India were asked to bat first on Day 1 at Headingley to kick-off the five match Test series in England, their first assignment since the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The duo announced their decision to step down well before the tour was due to begin, giving the side enough time to slot in KL Rahul as opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal with the hopes of overturning Rohit’s poor record at the top of the order. While the move paid off at large, Sanjay Manjrekar might have inadvertently cut short a stand that seemed to show more promise than the 91 runs it was eventually worth.
With Rahul batting on 34, the Karnataka veteran shouldered arms against a Brydon Carse outswinger as he had done plenty of times already through the morning. Sanjay, seated in the commentary box, could not help but use the opportunity to take a sly dig evidently aimed at Kohli and the talisman’s struggles against balls outside the off-stump in the final phase of his career.
"We know of a former batter who'd’ve gone after that delivery and got himself into trouble,” Manjrekar chimed. As luck would have it, Rahul went chasing after a wide full delivery shortly after and was caught at slip to depart at 42, inviting flak both towards him and the experienced Indian commentator.
