Shimron Hetmyer was the hero for Seattle Orcas with his last-ball six powering the side to a three-wicket win against MI New York in a high-scoring thriller in Dallas. Hetmyer remained unbeaten on 97 off 40 balls as Seattle Orcas registered their first win in the Major League Cricket 2025 season and also broke the record for the highest successful chase in the process.
Earlier in the day MI NY put a gargantuan total of 237/4 after being put into bat at the Grand Prairie Stadium on Saturday. Skipper Nicholas Pooran top-scored in the game smashing eight sixes and seven fours remaining unbeaten on 108 off 60 balls. He also put on 158 runs for the third wicket, a record for the highest partnership for any wicket in MLC, off just 68 balls with Tajinder Singh. The latter put on a show in boundary-hitting with eight sixes and fours in his 35-ball 95 and was unlucky to miss out on a well-deserved century. For Orcas, all-rounder Kyle Mayers and pacer Gerald Coetzee picked up 2/34 and 2/46, respectively.
With a massive total ahead of them, Mayers (37 off 20) and newly-appointed skipper Sikandar Raza (30 off 9) came up with entertaining cameos to power SEO to 86/3 at the end of the powerplay. However, it was Hetmyer who stole the show with his unbeaten 97 off just 40 balls hitting nine sixes and five fours. With six required off the last ball, the left-handed batter pulled Kieron Pollard over square leg to trigger wild celebrations in the dugout. With the win, SEO opened its account in the MLC this year with the highest successful chase in the history of the tournament.
