Mumbai Indians qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs with a clinical 59-run win over Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. Suryakumar Yadav stood tall with his unbeaten 43-ball 73 while Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets to end DC’s run in IPL this year.

‌After being put into bat, Mumbai Indians started well with Ryan Rickelton scoring back-to-back sixes against Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera and Will Jacks also chipping in as the home side reached 54/2 at the end of the powerplay. With the surface supporting spin and the ball gripping, Delhi Capital’s wrist spin combo of Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam proved a handful for the MI batters. Tilak Varma, in particular, struggled as the hosts managed only 47 runs in the eight overs from both spinners with Kuldeep sending back Ryan Rickelton. It looked like the Men in Blue and Gold would never recover from the slump but Suryakumar Yadav used all his experience to notch up 48 runs in the final two overs along with Naman Dhir. The duo were involved in a 21-ball 57 partnership as MI reached 180/5 at the end of 20 overs as Suryakumar top-scored with a 43-ball 73.

In response, DC were caught on the wrong foot as they were reduced to 27/3 in just the fifth over. KL Rahul, skipper Faf du Plessis and Abishek Porel were all dismissed with Delhi Capital’s chasing a tall total to remain relevant in the tournament. Their middle order tried whatever they could to keep the chase alive with Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma adding 38 runs for the sixth wicket. But with formidable turn from the surface, Mitchell Santner put on a spin bowling masterclass with a spell of 3/11 in four overs to turn the tide in MI’s favour. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah also chipped in with a spell of 3/12 as the DC innings was folded out for 121 with 10 balls to spare. With that MI qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs while it was curtains for DC in this year's campaign.

There is nothing more beautiful in a game of cricket than to watch a spinner in full flow and bamboozling the batter with his turn and guile. Mitchell Santner was a sight to behold during the MI vs DC at the Wankhede Stadium as he outfoxed the batters to produce a match-winning spell.
