Frank Lampard announces retirement from football

After a highly successful career that lasted 21 years, former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has announced his retirement from all forms of football today. The 38-year-old, who last played professionally for New York City in the MLS in the US, announced his decision in a post via social media.

Lampard spent a majority of his career at Stamford Bridge where he made 649 appearances in 13 years and represented his country 106 times. Lampard was a member of the fabled West Ham youth system but opted to switch to the other side of London in 2001. For Chelsea, the 38-year-old scored a club-record 211 goals winning one Champions League title, three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Europa League and a Community Shield with the Blues.

He made his name as a prolific goal scoring midfielder with 10 or more Premier League goals in 10 successive seasons. 

"Whilst I have received a number of exciting offers to continue playing, at 38 I feel now is the time to begin the next chapter in my life," Lampard wrote on his Instagram page.

"I'm grateful to the FA for the opportunity to study for my coaching qualifications and I look forward to pursuing the off-field opportunities that this decision opens."
