Backup Altay Bayindir also failed to impress, making a key mistake against Newcastle. Manager Amorim faces a tough call ahead of United crucial Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon.

With the spotlight firmly on Manchester United’s turbulent season, Andre Onana’s goalkeeping errors have become a major talking point. Since his £47.5 million arrival from Inter Milan, Onana has made eight mistakes leading to goals, the most by any Premier League goalkeeper since the start of the 2023–24 season. Criticism intensified after a costly performance in the 2–2 draw against Lyon, where two errors directly led to goals.

Former United midfielder Nemanja Matic labelled Onana as one of the club’s worst-ever keepers, possibly in defence of David de Gea, whose departure still divides opinion. Ruben Amorim now faces a crucial decision ahead of United’s Europa League quarter-final second leg: stick with Onana or gamble on Altay Bayindir, who struggled during his rare appearances, including a shaky outing against Newcastle.

Onana, despite his errors, ranks second in the Premier League for goals prevented (7.5), just behind Jordan Pickford (8.7). His leadership off the pitch is valued, but inconsistent defensive structures and tactical shifts have affected his form. United’s long-term plan didn’t foresee a goalkeeper crisis, and with both keepers' futures uncertain, the club could face more financial strain trying to fix a problem they believed was already solved.
