Manchester City have entered the battle to sign Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, rivalling Manchester United and Juventus. Sporting want €50-60m for the 26-year-old, despite his €80m release clause. Hjulmand, admired for his intelligence and interceptions, is also wanted by United boss Amorim, though City’s new director Hugo Viana may use connections to swoop in.

As the summer transfer window heats up, Manchester City have entered the race to sign Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, joining Manchester United and Juventus in pursuit of the €60m-rated midfielder. Hjulmand, 26, has impressed since his 2023 arrival at Sporting, registering seven goals and six assists in 96 appearances while showcasing sharp game intelligence and ball-winning ability. His consistent form earned him the captaincy and attracted interest across Europe.

Manchester United’s boss Ruben Amorim, formerly of Sporting, has already approved the move and is pushing for a reunion. However, City’s new director of football, Hugo Viana, also formerly with Sporting and is now trying to hijack the deal using his strong ties to the Portuguese club. Sporting are reportedly open to selling Hjulmand for €50-60m, below his €80m release clause, while Juventus are only prepared to offer €35m, leaving room for the English giants to swoop in.

Hjulmand prefers a move to Juventus over United, but the chance to work under Pep Guardiola at City and compete for major titles could sway his decision. Meanwhile, Sporting are trying to extend his contract, though progress is uncertain. The race for Hjulmand’s signature is intensifying, and the final decision may come down to both playing time and European football opportunities.
