New Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, unveiled in Rio on May 27, omitted Neymar from his first 25-man squad due to injury. The 65-year-old Italian, contracted through 2026, aims to unlock Vinícius Júnior’s full potential. Ancelotti also recalled Casemiro and acknowledged Brazil’s 24-year World Cup drought, calling the expectations a tall order.

As the Carlo Ancelotti era begins for Brazil, the legendary Italian coach made headlines by excluding Neymar from his first national squad and emphasizing faith in Vinícius Júnior’s potential. Introduced at a packed press conference in Rio de Janeiro on May 27, 2025, Ancelotti was welcomed by Brazil’s last two World Cup-winning coaches—Carlos Alberto Parreira (1994) and Luiz Felipe Scolari (2002). Contracted through the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, the 65-year-old tactician explained Neymar’s omission was due to his recent return from injury, adding that both understood the timing.

He predicted a stronger version of Vinícius Júnior under his leadership, stating the Real Madrid star would soon replicate his club form for Brazil. Ancelotti also recalled veteran midfielder Casemiro after nearly 18 months, citing his leadership and sacrifice as essential for a modern team. His 25-man squad will begin qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay next week.

Addressing the media, Ancelotti admitted to the immense pressure of delivering Brazil’s first World Cup title in 24 years but remained composed, crediting comfort and clarity on the pitch as keys to winning. With five Champions League titles and league victories in five countries, his experience offers Brazil renewed hope.
