Narendra Modi to address Rio-bound Indian Olympic contingent

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address India's Olympic athletes on Monday as the nation prepares to send its largest-ever contingent to the Rio Games. The PM will interact in an informal session with the 100+ odd athletes who have qualified for the Games that commence on August 5th.

“Shri Narendra Modi will meet the Olympic Contingent at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on Monday. So far, around 100 athletes from 13 sports disciplines have qualified for the Rio Olympics. The Prime Minister will interact informally with the sportspersons, and wish them well for their performance in the world’s biggest sporting arena,” the release said.

The number of athletes currently stands at 103, and some more are expected to swell the ranks through qualifiers over the next fortnight. India's previous campaign to the London Olympics in 2012 had seen 83 athletes.

The PM will reportedly meet the athletes tomorrow 10am at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.

Chef de mission of the Olympic contingent, Rakesh Gupta, said, “We have got a mail from the Sports Ministry which states that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji wants to meet the Rio-bound athletes. It will be great. I don’t know the agenda, but am sure it will be about their preparations and problems, if any.

“We have informed the sportspersons about this, and those who will be in India at that time will go. Those who are competing overseas in events like Wimbledon and athletics qualifiers will not be able to attend,” reported Mail Today.
