The Indian Olympic Association has postponed the National Games once again as the State Government of Goa cited its inability to host the event stating elections are scheduled during the same time. The National Games to be held last year had already been postponed from 2018 to 2019 once.

The Indian Olympic Association has stated that the 36th National Games have been postponed to be held later this year in September-October. The Games were already postponed from last year to March-April this year. But On Tuesday, Mukesh Kumar, Chairman, Games Technical Conduct Committee, National Games, stated that reasons cited by the Government of Goa are genuine concerns and hence they were left with no other choice.

“We are not entirely comfortable as we have to again look at the sports calendar as it affects the athletes. But the reasons cited are genuine. the government said there are two sets of elections, plus they also cited security concerns as the resources need to be deployed elsewhere,” Kumar was quoted as saying by the Indianexpress.com.

“Further the second set of dates we came up with also had hindrance as school exams would be in progress. The government has suggested that any other date is now possible only after the monsoons and we are now looking to see a period between September and October. We are concerned but the reasons cited are genuine.”

The new dates for the event would be discussed with the Goa government before a finals decision is made. Further Kumar also said that many other events schedule has to be cross checked before the timeline for the National Games has to be finalized. He also added that the Goa Government has agreed to keep the infrastructure for the games in ready condition for the event to take place.
