Match Report

The toss was won by England Women’s skipper Nat Sciver Brunt, who chose to bat on a grass covered surface at the Mecca of Cricket. English openers Tammy Beaumont and Emma Lamb provided a nice and steady start with 66 runs in the first 10 overs of the match. Though Lamb was dismissed shortly after in the 11th over by Arundhati Reddy, the England skipper came to the crease and made sure that the runs kept coming at the other end. However, there was a period where Indian spinners Sneh Rana and Deepti Sharma got the team back in the game with some tight overs in the middle to give the hosts a bit of a scare. Though the frugal spells did result in Beaumont finally being dismissed by Rana on a well-made 61 off 78 deliveries, Sciver-Brunt stood her ground at the other end and was supported well by Sophia Dunkley, who scored a crucial 31 off 40 deliveries to keep the scoreboard moving. The captain ended with 87 runs off 92 deliveries, thus taking the team to a decent total of 268/7 at the end of the first innings.

Though India had managed to chase down a similar total in the first ODI at Southampton, the situation at Lord's was a different story altogether. Disaster struck as they lost Pratika Rawal early in the powerplay due to a brilliant inswinger by Kate Cross in the seventh over. The visitors could only manage 45 runs for the loss of one wicket in 10 overs, which put them in a spot of bother straight away. Though Smriti Mandhana tried to bring some balance to the chase and formed some decent partnerships with Harleen Deol (28 off 35) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (37 off 45) in the middle overs, Lauren Bell was able to breakthrough as soon as the stands began to feel threatening. The situation turned worse when Mandhana was dismissed in the 35th over by England star spinner Sophie Ecclestone for 74 runs by a beautifully flighted delivery. The Indian team continued to lose wickets therefater at regular intervals as Jemimah Rodrigues was dismissed after failing to execute a pull shot off a well-directed bouncer by Bell, being caught at deep square leg, and Sharma eventually followed suit after receiving a toe-crushing yorker by Cross. In the end, the visitors failed to chase down the target and were restricted to a score of 243/9, which resulted in a 25-run win for the home side as they levelled the series 1-1.

Player of the Match

England Women’s captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was awarded the player of the match prize as she lead from the front with an incredible knock in the first innings, ending as the game's highest run-getter with 87.
