Aminul Islam named interim BCB President less than 24 hours after Faruque Ahmed sacking
Former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam has been appointed as the President of Bangladesh Cricket Board until elections later this year after Faruque Ahmed was forced to step down on May 29. Aminul will take a temporary leave for the same from his role as an ICC Development Manager in Australia.
Bangladesh Cricket Board have a new man at the helm in Aminul Islam after a no-confidence motion from eight directors led to the dismissal of Faruque Ahmed as a Sports Ministry's representative in the BCB Board of Director. Aminul moved into coaching after his professional retirement in 2002, before working with the Asian Cricket Council to help develop the sport in China and leading the ICC Pathways Program for Asia. As a player, Aminul captained the Tigers in their first ever World Cup appearance in 1999 and a year later became Bangladesh's first-ever centurion in their debut Test.
Aminul will have his work cut out to help Bangladesh cricket move past the various controversies that plagued Faruque's tenure. The former President had come under fire for the sudden sacking of Chandrika Hathurusinghe before the Bangladesh Premier League was marred by disputes, headlined by the non-payment of salaries and dues by the Durbar Rajshahi franchise. According to reports by ESPCricinfo, Faruque had failed to consult his fellow directors on important decision, and ironically it was his focus on the BCB elections later this year that ultimately triggered his removal.
However, Aminul has stated he would only stay in charge till a new man is elected but did not rule out the possibility of extending his stay at the helm if the opportunity arises.
"My primary goal is to hold a transparent election and create the best cricket board. That's it. I'm not interested in running in the next election. The government asked me, and I said yes. Now it's just a matter of following the process," Aminul told Cricbuzz after his appointment.
"I don't know anything officially yet about the exact role I'll be offered. Since I'm not fully familiar with the board's constitution, I think if I'm appointed as a counselor by the National Sports Council (NSC) and they grant me directorship, then it will be up to the board directors to elect me as the BCB president.
Aminul also confirmed that he had taken permission from the global governing body to step away from his role Down Under.
"The ICC told me, 'you're free. You can go and work there (in Bangladesh) for as long as you need. You can come back anytime. The door is always open for you.' I'm grateful to the ICC for giving me the green signal to go ahead, even though I'm currently the only member of the Asia team."
