After the announcement from Real Madrid on Sunday, it was confirmed that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is suffering from sacroiliitis, an inflammation in the sacroiliac joint that connects the spine to the pelvis. While the condition is not considered serious, it will keep him out for a few days and force him to miss Belgium’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against North Macedonia and Wales.
Courtois had recently returned to international duty following a coaching change in the Belgian team. Despite this setback, optimism remains high at Valdebebas. Real Madrid expects Courtois to recover in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled from June 14 to July 13, 2025. The medical staff is relying on rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatories for his recovery, which could take up to three weeks depending on progress.
In Courtois's absence, Ukrainian keeper Andriy Lunin is set to start the early matches of the Club World Cup. Having delivered a solid season, Lunin now has a golden opportunity to solidify his future at the club. Meanwhile, Real Madrid continues monitoring long-term options, including Gianluigi Donnarumma and Lucas Chevalier, in case they need to plan for a future beyond Courtois.
