The Pakistani openers got their side off to a flyer and were in a commanding position of 128-0 before the incident in question occurred. Indian skipper, Virat Kohli continued to attack the Pakistan batting with the off-spin of Ravichandran Ashwin, who bowling a tight line, succeeded in keeping the explosive opening pair in check for the first five deliveries of the over. 

On the last delivery of the over, Azhar Ali flicked the ball towards the leg side and called Fakhar Zaman to cross for a quick single. While Ali anticipated a single, Zaman was in no mood to take the risk and did not start with the run. However, Ali, had no idea of his partner's whereabouts as his eyes tracked the ball while he was running towards the non-striker's end. Bumrhah did well to stretch to his right and gathered the ball and quickly released it to MS Dhoni who comfortably dislodged the bails when Ali and Zaman both were stranded at the same end.
