ENG vs IND | Twitter unimpressed as Root’s fortune shines bright with no takers for Ravindra Jadeja’s throw

Test cricket is about seizing key moments, and India missed a trick during the first session of the fourth Test against England in Manchester. With Joe Root still in his early 20s, Ravindra Jadeja’s throw was not backed up at the bowling end, helping the veteran batter survive a horrific mix-up.

‌England started well on day three of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford in Manchester with overnight batters Ollie Pope and Joe Root taking the side forward in their pursuit of India’s total. Starting at 225/2 and with 133 runs still more to get, the batters added 21 runs in the first seven overs.

Mohammed Siraj kept things tight, bowling five dot balls in the 54th over before pitching the cherry on a short of a length area outside off stump. Root adjusted well to the awkward bounce, removing his bottom hand immediately as the ball made contact with the bat.

The veteran batter watched the cherry roll onto backward point with the gully fielder putting a dive to get a hand on it. Root, however, could not shift his focus to the call of his partner Ollie Pope, who was almost halfway down.

After a slight hesitation, Pope continued with his run as Root was forced to run towards the bowling end. With Jadeja picking the ball and throwing it in a flash, the former England captain was way outside the crease. But the ball missed the stumps and went to the mid-on fielder.

The Indian all-rounder was furious as there was no one to back up at the non-striker’s end with Washington Sundar being a tad late to arrive. Jadeja was on his face as he angrily queried why he was not there on time. Even Siraj was not impressed as he joined Jadeja in questioning Sundar.

Twitter was disappointed with the wasted opportunity, as Joe Root was still in his 20s when this transpired. The hosts went on for lunch at 332/2, with both batters completing half-centuries.

There was a chance there!
