ENG vs IND | Twitter chuckles as wild Duckett throw leaves Brook sprinting for medical attention

Friendly fire is not a term one would expect to hear in cricket, especially in long-drawn out Tests, yet here we are. Ben Duckett nearly rendered Harry Brook severely injured in Leeds on Saturday with a ballistic throw that caught the Yorkshireman on his ribs, leaving him grimacing in pain.

‌India picked up Day 2 exactly where they had left off on Friday as Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant effortlessly extended their overnight stand of 138 runs for the fourth wicket. By the time the first drinks break rolled around, Pant was on the brink of a third century on English soil and itching to get to the mark before the break could be called. It was this desperation for the milestone that inadvertently led to Harry Brook rolling on the floor with pain.
On the final ball of the 98th over, a Shoaib Bashir length delivery dipped on Pant to take the outside edge and roll past a diving Brook at slip. Pant called for a run and scurried through to the other end even as Ben Duckett rushed to the Dukes with a hope of prying a wicket from nowhere. However, in his hurry, the opener did not think to scan his environment before firing a throw towards the stumps, unaware that Brook was right in the “firing line” as Ravi Shastri called on air. The hard leather ball smashed into Brook’s ribcage, provoking a loud yelp for him, and as the drinks rushed on Brook ran in the opposite direction to get some attention.
Even the assailant Duckett could not help but break out into a sheepish smile, aptly reflecting Twitterati’s reaction.

Test cricket is played as much in the mind as on the ground, with temperament and composure prerequisites to survive five gruelling days in the field. Rishabh Pant does not fit any such conventional moulds, which is why he keeps reminding himself to respect the game as was the case in Leeds.
