With Robert Lewandowski staying at Barcelona until 2026, the club halted plans to sign a new striker. As a result, Arsenal have secured 27-year-old Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP for €60 million. The Swedish striker, who scored 54 goals and 13 assists last season, will join Arsenal on a contract running until 2030.

When the summer transfer window heated up, Arsenal made a decisive move by activating Viktor Gyökeres’ €60 million release clause, beating Barcelona to one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers. The 27-year-old Swedish forward had been on FC Barcelona’s radar as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, whose contract runs until 2026.

However, with Lewandowski staying put for now, Barcelona backed out, clearing the path for Arsenal. Gyökeres, coming off an extraordinary season with Sporting CP, scored 54 goals and provided 13 assists in just 52 matches, numbers that catapulted him into elite striker territory. His strength, movement, and lethal finishing made him a hot commodity, and Arsenal wasted no time, offering a five-year contract until 2030.

The timing was perfect, as a new clause effective July 1 dropped his release fee from a higher value to €60 million, making the transfer more viable. The deal marks a statement of intent from Mikel Arteta, who is building for long-term success at the Emirates. Gyökeres’ rise from Coventry City to Sporting and now the Premier League reflects a meteoric career trajectory, and with Arsenal swooping in just as Barcelona hesitated, the Gunners appear to have landed a game-changing forward.
