When the final whistle blew in the Championship play-off semi-final, Coventry City's promotion hopes were shattered by a heartbreaking 122nd-minute goal from Sunderland. Following the defeat, head coach Frank Lampard, who took charge in November and guided the team to an impressive fifth-place finish, has made significant squad changes. The club has released eight players, including Jamie Paterson, who joined in January and made just eight appearances.
The 33-year-old will now join League One side Plymouth Argyle. Academy products Jack Burroughs, Ryan Howley, and Cian Tyler were also released. Burroughs, 24, had been with the club since age seven and made 21 senior appearances, while Howley featured eight times before spending last season on loan at Ayr United. Tyler, 23, never made a first-team appearance despite years in the youth setup.
Four Under-21 players — Aston Ellard, Daniel Rachel, Kain Ryan, and Jayden Smith — have also been let go. Meanwhile, Coventry have extended the contracts of midfielder Jamie Allen and goalkeeper Luke Bell by one year. Allen, 30, has played 151 times for the club, while 21-year-old Bell, signed from Wolves, serves as a youth-team goalkeeper. The decisions mark the start of Lampard’s rebuild for another promotion push.
