ENG vs IND | Twitter in splits as Stokes takes inexplicable DRS despite being struck plumb

Ben Stokes was in shock while India wheeled away in celebration after his dismissal at Edgbaston on Sunday

Technology has practically removed a layer of protection for players from the outside world, with their every action and word easy to scrutinize. Even so, it required no replay to deem Ben Stokes was plumb as a whistle at Edgbaston on Sunday, even if his decision to review suggested otherwise.

England were left staring at a historic defeat at Egdbaston early on Sunday wehn Akash Deep sentย both their incumbent batters packing to leave the visitors requiring to fend off six hours with just five wickets in hand. Nevertheless, with Ben Stokes, who amongst active cricketers has perhaps the greatest penchant for pulling off miracles on the cricket field, and Jamie Smith, fresh off a 184 in the first innings, still at the crease, some fleeting hope remained. All of it disappeared in a flash in the 41st over of the innings when Wasihngton Sundar dispatched the England skipper,ย thus sounding the inevitable toll of defeat which seemed to send Stokes into a whirwlind.

Trundling in from around the stumps, Sundar gorgeously flighted a length delivery from an angle at length to draw Stokes forward in defence. However, the veteran's bat got stuck behind his pad, as the Dukes struck his front pad plumb in front of the stumps. The Men in Blue barely needed to appeal before the umpire raised his finger and while they immediately wheeled away in celebration, Stokes looked like a deer caught in the headlights. The 34-year-old with eyes agape showed little hesitation to go upstairs as he animatedly explained his case to Smith, but the big screen soon had him looking foolish when it showed three legs with the leg well in front of the bat.

Twitterati was amused, to say the least.ย
