WATCH, WI vs AUS | Anderson Phillip redefines 'impact sub' with Herculean dive to pull off blinder
Test cricket seems to be going through somewhat of a catching pandemic, with both India and the West Indies guilty of letting matches slip recently with dropped chances. However, Anderson Phillip took it upon himself in Kingston on Sunday to try and mitigate the damage with a catch for the ages.
No Australian batter managed to register a half-century in the first innings of their maiden away pink ball Test, at Sabrina Park in Jamaica, as the side folded out for 225 on Day 1. Cameron Green and Steve Smith showed promise with knocks of 46 and 48 respectively, but the pink Dukes combined with a lively pitch meant the batters had their work cut out. However, as Alex Carey and Pat Cummins would show later on, the threat of counterattack to change the game's momentum remained as viable an option as ever, and with Travis Head in the Aussie lineup the hosts were far from safe. That is until Anderson Phillip decided to invoke his supernatural abilities and leave both teams stunned.
Head was up against Justin Greaves on the final ball of the 65th over and upon being offered width decided to take the medium pacer on. Head drove hard at the ball but he had misjudged the length as the Dukes hit high on the bat and flew towards the edge of the circle. Luckily for him, the ball seemed to be heading into no-man's land between mid-off and cover, even as Phillip sprinted to his right hoping to get there in time. However, just when the danger seemed to have passed, Phillips inexplicably launched himself off the ground and hurled full-stretch towards the ball with both arms extended beyond him. Somehow, the pink rock not only ended up sticking in Phillip's mitts but also refused to dislodge itself even when he hit the deck with a thud.
Phillip immediately wheeled away in ecstatic celebration with his teammates giving chase, while all Head could do was shake his head in disbelief before making his way back to the dressing room.
