Batters are often taken by surprise whenever the red cherry goes on to break their willow and Yashasvi Jaiswal was taken aback during the fourth Test against England in Manchester. The southpaw had to ask for a new bat with Chris Woakes’ inswinger hitting the willow right below its shoulder.

‌With the five-match series evenly poised at 2-1 ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester, England won the toss and sent India in at Old Trafford under cloudy and overcast conditions. Both KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal adopted a cautious approach with the Dukes’ ball doing a lot in favourable conditions for seamers.

The visitors managed 25/0 in eight overs against the new-ball duo of Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer, with Rahul scoring 15 off 30 balls and Jaiswal at eight from 18 balls. Woakes kept things tight with four dot balls against the southpaw in his fifth straight over.

He bowled a short of a length delivery off the fifth, that swung in wildly towards Jaiswal with the batter bringing down his bat just in time to fend it off. But he made contact with the ball right on top of the ‘V’, just below the shoulder of the bat.

The bat broke immediately, bending inwards, forcing Jaiswal to ask for a new bat. Twitter was shocked by Woakes’ bat-breaking delivery even as Karun Nair ran in with the replacement bats.

That was hard on the wood!

Boom!

That was fast and high!

Yeah he did!

Pretty high on the bat!

New bat has come in!

That hurts!

Yeah!

He has got spare!

That was not supposed to happen!
