England Women completed their domination over West Indies Women in the white-ball series with a nine-wicket win in the third and final ODI at Taunton on Saturday. With yet another emphatic win, the host completed a 6-0 rout of the visitors after sweeping the three-match T20I series last month. Skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt rushed through the proceedings during the chase with a quickfire unbeaten half-century to close the contest with more than 10 overs to spare after leg-spinner Sarah Glenn had restricted the visitors with her 3/21 in four overs.
With forecasts suggesting an imminent rain, Sciver-Brunt put the Windies in after winning the toss and the new-ball duo of Kate Cross and Em Arlott proved her right. Kate struck in the first over of the innings while Arlott picked up two wickets in her first two overs as the visitors were three down with the score reading just four in the fourth over. Opener Qiana Joseph and stand-in skipper Shemaine Campbelle rebuilt the innings with a 39-run partnership when heavy rain stopped play. With the officials forced to reduce the match to 21-overs a side, the Windies had another bad start losing Campbelle off the first ball when proceedings resumed. Leg-spinner Sarah Glenn, who was introduced as late as the 14th over, struck in her first over to dismiss Shabika Gajnabi as West Indies stared down the barrel. The side would not have gone past the 100-run mark but for Aaliyah Alleyne’s late burst in the last three overs. She scored six boundaries in seven balls in her entertaining cameo of 27 off 18 as the visitors ended at 106/8 in 21 overs. For England, Em Arlott finished with 2/15 in four overs apart from Sarah Glenn’s three-fer.
England captain Sciver-Brunt took it upon herself as she promoted herself and opened alongside Sophia Dunkley. It was the latter who started aggressively with four boundaries in her 21-ball 26 as the home side raced to 40 in the first five overs. New batter Alice Capsey also started quickly as Sciver-Brunt found the odd boundary from the other end. Sciver-Brunt then shifted gears, smashing leg-spinner Karishma Ramharack for three fours in the 10th over as England quickly approached the target. She was in no mood to relent, scoring three more fours in the next over off Ashmini Munisar, the second of which brought her fifty in just 32 balls after being at 19 off 19 at one stage, as England cruised past the West Indies total. The skipper remained unbeaten on 57 off 33 with nine fours to her name as Capsey gave her company at the chequered flag with an 11-ball 20.
