Aiden Markram played the innings of his life to take South Africa to the WTC 2025 title with a five-wicket win over Australia at Lord’s. He top-scored in the match with a stroke-filled 136 and stitched a match-winning partnership of 147 with skipper Temba Bavuma to helm the Proteas’ chase of 282.

‌With 69 runs to score in pursuit of a first ICC title in 27 years, South Africa had a nervous start to day four against Australia in the World Test Championship 2025 final at Lord’s. The unbeaten pair of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma could add just four runs to their overnight association of 143 runs as the Proteas skipper nicked one from his counterpart Pat Cummins to be caught by gloveman Alex Carey. New batter Tristan Stubbs found it difficult to negotiate the uneven bounce and appreciable turn from the wicket though Markram motored on comfortably as though he was playing on a different wicket. When Mitchell Starc went through Stubbs’ defence to end his struggling 43-ball eight-run innings, the Proteas were still adrift by 41 runs.

But the 35-run partnership between Markram and David Bedingham took them to the doorstep with the former being dismissed with victory just six runs away. Though he missed out staying till the end, the Lucknow Super Giants batter had already notched up a match-winning knock of 136, which included 14 fours. Bavuma also shone with a gritty 66, despite carrying a hamstring injury, as the duo’s partnership proved the difference between both sides. South Africa reached the target of 282 in the extended first session of day four to seal the WTC 2025 final by five wickets for their first ICC title after winning the inaugural edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998.
