When the news broke on May 12, 2025, that Real Madrid had not yet made a formal offer to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold early, it raised questions about his potential involvement in next month’s Club World Cup. Although Alexander-Arnold is set to join Madrid as a free agent after his Liverpool contract expires on June 30, the Spanish giants hope to bring him in early so he can feature in the expanded 32-team tournament in the U.S., beginning with their group-stage match against Al Hilal on June 18 in Miami.

Despite contacting Liverpool hours after his departure announcement on May 5, Madrid has yet to submit a formal proposal. Liverpool may demand compensation, especially as the full-back still draws wages through June. However, Madrid could argue that Liverpool would benefit financially by releasing him early. If no deal is made, Madrid could still register him mid-tournament for the knockout rounds due to FIFA's new mid-tournament registration rule.

Alexander-Arnold was booed by sections of the Anfield crowd during a 2-2 draw against Arsenal, marking his first appearance since announcing his exit. Meanwhile, Real Madrid also aims to appoint Xabi Alonso as head coach before the Club World Cup campaign begins.
