Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, 33, has completed a move to Manchester City, ending his four-year stint at Stamford Bridge. Captain Reece James posted an emotional farewell, calling Bettinelli a brother who supported him through injuries. The veteran made just one appearance for Chelsea and now joins City ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

At the start of June 2025, Chelsea confirmed the departure of veteran goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, who has joined Manchester City ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup. The 33-year-old spent four years at Stamford Bridge, mostly serving as the third-choice keeper, and made just one senior appearance—a 5-1 FA Cup win over Chesterfield in 2022 under Thomas Tuchel.

The news prompted an emotional farewell from Chelsea captain Reece James, who called Bettinelli a “brother” and thanked him for his support during multiple injury setbacks. In a heartfelt Instagram post, James shared memories and expressed deep appreciation for Bettinelli's presence during tough times. Though rarely seen on the pitch, Bettinelli’s influence in the dressing room was clearly significant, making his departure more than just a routine squad change.

His move to City comes just after the exit of their long-serving backup keeper Scott Carson, suggesting Guardiola’s intent to bring in experience for depth. Meanwhile, Chelsea are also busy in the transfer market, pushing for a £105m triple signing to support new manager Enzo Maresca before the Club World Cup. Bettinelli’s transfer might seem minor on paper, but his exit marks the end of a quiet yet valued role at Chelsea.
