Ravindra Jadeja went against the BCCI guidelines, coming in early on the morning of the second day of the second Test against England. The Indian all-rounder violated the governing body’s new standard operating procedures to have extra batting practice before continuing his overnight innings.

‌Indian all-rounder flouted the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s new standard operating procedures as he came in early on the second day of the second Test against England in Birmingham. The BCCI had, after the Australian tour earlier this year, brought in some stringent measures to be followed by the team during overseas tours.

With the players required to move together to or from the ground in the team bus on match days, Jadeja walked into Edgbaston much earlier than the team bus arrived. The number one all-rounder in Tests, who was unbeaten on 41 at the end of day one, hopped in early to have additional batting practice ahead of the start of the day’s play.

The southpaw, however, is unlikely to be sanctioned by the BCCI as his crucial knock of 89, including a 203-run partnership with skipper Shubman Gill for the sixth wicket, helped the visitors to a formidable total of 587 in the first innings. India were in a spot of bother at 211/5 when Jadeja came into the middle after the quick wickets of Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy but the mammoth partnership settled the nerves and laid the foundation for India’s big total.

"Somewhere I felt that I should go and bat extra because the ball was still new," Jadeja said. "I felt if I could see the new ball off, it would become easy for the rest of the innings. Luckily, I could bat till lunch, and then Washy [Washington Sundar] also batted well with Shubman. The more you bat in England, the better it is because you never feel you are set in England. At any time, a ball can swing and take your edge or bowl you."

"When you contribute with the bat for the team, it feels great. When you are playing outside India, and the team needs you more, it feels good," Jadeja said. "From 210 for 5, to put together a big partnership to take the team forward, it is a challenge. I took it as a challenge. If you can stick around with the captain and put together a big partnership, it gives you confidence as a cricketer and a batter that in the coming matches also you can contribute."
