India ended day one of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester at 264/4 on Wednesday. The left-handed pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan scored gritty half-centuries to headline India’s batting display while England skipper Ben Stokes finished with two wickets.

‌India had a good start, after being put into bat under overcast conditions, in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. Openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal showed caution and patience as the visitors went in for lunch without losing a wicket, with the score reading 78 after 26 overs.

However, the home side bounced back in the second session with three wickets, including both the set openers. Rahul was the first to depart, poking at a short of a length delivery outside off stump from Chris Woakes, four runs short of a well-deserved half-century. Meanwhile, Jaiswal completed his 12th half-century before edging a straighter one from spinner Liam Dawson. With captain Shubman Gill’s dismissal on the stroke of tea, India walked in for the break with the score reading 149/3.

Sai Sudharsan held one end up while Rishabh Pant was his usual aggressive self as the duo added 72 runs for the fourth wicket. But the wicketkeeper-batter (37) got injured after getting hit on his foot while going for an audacious reverse sweep of Chris Woakes and had to walk back. Sudharsan completed his maiden Test fifty in the next over before being dismissed by England skipper Ben Stokes for a patient and gritty 61 off 151 balls. However, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur ensured that India did not lose another wicket till the end of the day.
