Sonal Dinusha scalped two big wickets on his first day as a Test cricketer

Bangladesh could not capitalize on a plethora of dropped catches at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo to end Day 1 at 220/8. Vishwa Fernando and Sonal Dinusha scalped two wickets each while Shadman Islam top scored for Tigers with 46, with the pitch beginning to turn by play's end.

Opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka made the most of early moisture as Asitha and Vishwa Fernando extracted sharp seam movement. Vishwa eventually cleaned up Anamul Haque for a duck after two missed chances. Bangladesh crawled to 12/1 after 10 overs, but Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam settled in before Dhananjaya de Silva’s introduction turned the tide. Mominul slapped a half-tracker straight to cover for 21, triggering a slowdown as Shanto and Shadman cautiously saw through to Lunch at 71/2.

Post-Lunch, Vishwa struck again, inducing an edge from Shanto, and soon after, Shadman was dismissed for 46 thanks to a sharp turning delivery from Ratnayake and a reflex catch by de Silva. At 70/4, Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das rebuilt, aided by rain and dropped catches, putting on 67 before Litton fell for 34 just before Tea to debutant Sonal Dinusha.

The evening session saw Mushfiqur perish for 35 to a rash sweep, and while Mehidy Hasan Miraz showed intent, Vishwa removed him late in the day. Nayeem Hasan, too, couldn’t hold on till Stumps as Asitha uprooted his off-stump, capping a strong day for Sri Lanka.
