The IPL, in a memo to all franchises, informed that they can sign players temporarily for the remainder of this season given the unavailability of some of the foreign players. However, the players signed after the suspension of the League will not be eligible for retention ahead of the next season.

‌The Indian Premier League, in a memo to all the franchises, announced that the teams are eligible to make temporary replacements for players who are unavailable to join their respective sides once the League resumes on Saturday. The decision comes in the wake of some of the foreign players like Jake Fraser McGurk and Jamie Overton confirming their withdrawal from the IPL 2025 campaign and has resulted in a tweak in the current player replacement rules.

Till last season, all the teams were allowed to replace players, who were injured or ill, only before or during their 12th game. But this time the League has provided some leniency allowing them to name replacements even after their 12th game given the fact that not all the foreign players will return to action once the season resumes on Saturday, May 17. The IPL 2025 was initially suspended last Friday owing to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

However, the IPL has also ensured that teams don’t take undue advantage of the change in rule by announcing that such players will not be eligible for retention ahead of IPL 2026. Any team naming a replacement after the League’s suspension will be eligible to play them in the remaining matches this season but will have to acquire them through auction if they wish to acquire their services next edition.

"Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, temporary replacement players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament," the league said.

"This decision is subject to the condition that the temporary replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026," they confirmed.
