Australia completely outplayed the West Indies in a high-scoring third T20I of the five-match series at the Warner Park Stadium. Star all-rounder Tim David’s game-changing and swashbuckling century (102* off just 37 balls) destroyed the Caribbean bowling attack and helped the Aussies easily chase.
The visiting skipper, Mitchell Marsh, won the toss and asked the Caribbean side to bat first. The opening pair of Brandon King and skipper Shai Hope provided a strong and outstanding opening stand of 125 runs in just 11.4 overs. King scored 62 (36), alongside Hope’s unbeaten century (102 off just 57 balls). This partnership was broken by Mitchell Owen when he trapped King in a fuller-length delivery on the leg stump, which the latter ended up playing in the hands of Sean Abbott. Following this dismissal, Hope and Hetmyer stitched a 37-run partnership for the second wicket, when the latter fell prey to Adam Zampa on the third ball of the 15th over. Riding on the brilliant knocks played by King and Hope, the hosts posted a big total of 214/4, giving a big target to chase for the visitors. Ellis, Zamoa, and Owen were the wicket-takers for the Australians in the high-scoring first innings.
While chasing the target, Australia faced two early blows, losing their first two wickets after scoring 45 runs in just 3.3 overs. Maxwell and Marsh went back to the pavilion after scoring 22 and 20 runs each. Furthermore, Australia lost the next two wickets in quick succession as Romario Shepherd dismissed Josh Inglis and Cameron Green for individual scores of just 15 (6) and 11 (14). But then came an explosive and match-winning unbeaten partnership of 128 runs for the fifth wicket between Tim David and Mitchell Owen (16-ball 36). It also included Tim David’s blistering century, as he smashed an unbeaten knock of 102 runs off just 37 balls, with six fours and 11 sixes. Shepherd claimed 2 wickets, alongside a wicket picked by Jason Holder.
The sensational batting efforts of Owen and David helped the Aussies chase down the target comfortably in just 16.1 overs, scoring 215/4. With this win, the Mitchell Marsh-led Aussies have taken an unassailable lead of 3-0 in the five-match T20I series. Tim David won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his game-changing century.
